ZAGREB, June 30 (Hina) - The Croatian Parliament House of
Representatives with most votes refused the request of six
opposition parties for the establishment of a commission of inquiry
which would probe into the legality and possible misuse of security
and intelligence services in Croatia.
The Lower House adopted conclusions by which it determined there
were no grounds for allegations of illegal influences on the work of
intelligence and security services and their possible anti-
constitutional acts.
The six-item conclusions, adopted after Tuesday's extensive
discussion on the security and intelligence system, were motioned
by the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) party.
The Lower House held all measures should be undertaken to protect
the intelligence and security system from unauthorised disclosure
and publishing of confidential documents.
The conclusions determine that the existing legal and other
regulations defining the organisation and work of security
services were in accordance with the Constitution.
The House of Representatives set obligations for the Committee for
Internal Affairs and National Security to begin drafting a law on
national security which would entirely define the areas,
activities and institutions of national security, as well as
mechanisms of parliamentary supervision, with the aim of effective
protection of national security and the rights and freedoms of a
person and citizen.
The Committee for Internal Affairs was also committed to suggest
representatives for the Council for the establishment of secrecy,
in line with the Law on the Secrecy of Information.
