AGREEMENT SIGNED, FARMERS TO STOP PROTESTING

ZAGREB, June 30 (Hina) - The protest of Croatian farmers which started on Saturday on roads throughout the country will be discontinued and farmers will unblock roads within eight hours, it was said following the signing of an agreement between Agriculture Minister Ivan Djurkic and the president of the Croatian Farmers' Association (HSS) Ivan Kolar, in Zagreb on Wednesday. According to the document, the Government supports the agreement in principle between wheat producers and processors that the net price of wheat per kilogram for the 1999 yields amount to between 0.95 and 1 kuna (about US$0.13). It was agreed that all immediate claims which are older than 60 days and have to be paid by the state, be paid to producers as soon as possible, and that all future claims be paid within a period of 60 days. It was agreed that the Government and the HSS and other farmers' organisations would set up joint commissions to determine the most appropriate modalities of protection of domestic production from the import of agricultural products, abiding by World Trade Organisation regulations. The two sides also agreed to establish mixed commissions for monitoring the payment of farmers' claims by economic subjects and the state. (hina) rml
