ZAGREB, June 26 (Hina) - Speaking about the role of the media in the
development of Croatian democracy, vice-president of the ruling
Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), Vesna Skare Ozbolt, said at the
party's Main Committee session Saturday, that claims about the lack
of media freedom in the country were false.
"Proof to this is the fact that Croatia has more press than its
economic capabilities allow," she said.
The cause to numerous law suits being led against reporters is
obvious in the "foray of sensationalism into Croatian
journalism".
The public frequently ignores the fact that these are private
suits, and among those filing suits against reporters, a
significant number are fighters fir human rights and members of
opposition parties, she said.
She held the HDZ's lack of offensive against the media is visible.
"All our media-related actions are only reactions, which gives off
the air of political weakness".
In his speech about the organisation and political preparations of
the HDZ for the upcoming elections, HDZ main secretary Drago Krpina
stressed the most important task for the party was to show, by word
and act, that it understood the expectations of the Croatian people
and worked on solving their problems.
He stressed the importance of intensifying contacts with European
parties with similar programmes.
Justice Minister Zvonimir Separovic stressed Croatia should
continue its cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal
for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), but not unconditionally.
"We will not ask for talks only about people for whose extradition
the Tribunal is interested, but we wish to provide evidence for all
crimes committed against Croats in Croatia and Bosnia-
Herzegovina," Separovic said.
