ZADAR, June 11 (Hina) - Zadar police on Friday arrested a famous Croatian soccer first-league umpire, Reno Sinovcic, for suspicion of extortion. Sinovcic was apprehended after reports to police from a victim. The victim had agreed to
pay DM1,100 to Sinovcic every month in marked bills the police had given him. Police said the whole operation was jeopardised by last week's article in Croatia's weekly Nacional and its publishing of documents from an investigation into Sinovcic. Nacional ran an article about the alleged rigging of the soccer championship and said Sinovcic had, under blackmail by the Agency for the Protection of Constitutional Order (SZUP), agreed to rig the championship, and also published documents from the police investigation about Sinovcic.
