NEW YORK, June 10 (Hina) - The adopted UN Security Council
Resolution is a turning point for the crisis in Kosovo and
Yugoslavia, and could significantly contribute to the
establishment of lasting peace and stability in the south-east of
Europe, Croatia's representative at the United Nations, Ivan
Simonovic, said in New York on Thursday.
Simonovic said it was particularly important that international
factors had firm guarantees and wide jurisdiction, and the
resolution is based on a UN charter, which authorises the use of
power if necessary to implement UN decisions.
"Through its special representative, the UN is taking over the
civil administration in Kosovo with the basic goal being the return
of refugees, establishment of peace and security, and the promotion
of economic and political situation," Simonovic said.
All states neighbouring with Yugoslavia are obligated to cooperate
with international forces, which for Croatia "only means a
continuation of actions hitherto".
Neighbouring countries, including Croatia, have suffered million-
scale damage in the economy, and it is thus, "encouraging that the
resolution supports plans of the EU and other international
organisations for economic rehabilitation with the final aim being
to stabilise the entire region," Simonovic said.
The resolution announces "an end to the bloody period" caused by the
politics of the Serb leadership, he said.
"I believe a period of speedy accession of Croatia and other states
in the region into Euro-Atlantic associations is coming up, which
makes possible long-term peace, security and economic prosperity,"
Simonovic said.
