COLOGNE, June 10 (Hina) - We believe Great Britain will support the
start of negotiations between Croatia and the European union on the
stability agreement and accession in autumn, that is, the second
half of September, Croatian Foreign Minister Mate Granic said after
a meeting with his British counterpart, Robin Cook, in Cologne on
Thursday.
Besides Croatia's drawing closer to the EU and bilateral relations,
the two ministers spoke about expectations of the Stability Pact
for southeastern Europe, the text of which is being harmonised at
Thursday's ministerial conference in Cologne, and about the
solving of the Kosovo crisis and the situation in Yugoslavia after
the war.
The two ministers hailed good progress in talks on the determining
of the border between Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina and pressures
for mediation in solving border issues with Slovenia, Granic said.
According to him, Cook also commended Croatia's support to the
democratic government in Montenegro and Croatia's stand during the
entire Kosovo crisis.
Cook also endorsed an agreement between the ruling party and the
Opposition in Croatia with regards to the electoral law, and
expressed belief in progress in the democratisation of the Croatian
Radio and Television.
The two ministers also spoke about current events in Croatia.
"The most recent events surrounding the soccer championship and Mr.
Separovic were issues of interest with the British side," Granic
said after the talks.
Separovic, a former justice minister and director of the Croatian
Intelligence Agency was apprehended Tuesday night for suspicion of
having disclosed secret documents to the Nacional weekly, which, in
turn, used this information in an article claiming the soccer
championship was rigged.
