ZAGREB, June 7 (Hina) - Croatia's diplomacy is willing to play its
role in shaping this part of Europe, Croatian Foreign Minister Mate
Granic said in Zagreb on Monday at Croatian Diplomacy Days.
"Through its diplomacy, Croatia is willing to cooperate and have a
transparent internal system, which will be the target points of
international politics at the beginning of the third millennium,"
Granic said at the manifestation marking the day of diplomacy.
A collection of papers of the diplomatic academy, entitled
"Experiences of Contemporary Croatian Diplomacy", was presented.
It contains presentations made at an eponymous 1998 symposium at
which 30 Croatian diplomats spoke about the establishment of
sovereign Croatia and the role Croatian diplomacy played in
implementing strategic directives of Croatia's foreign policy.
Held under the auspices of the President of the Republic, Croatian
Diplomacy Days are marked on the day when in 879 Pope John VIII
forwarded a letter to Prince Branimir recognising him as a
legitimate ruler and Croatia as an independent state.
Croatia's present Foreign Ministry has 74 embassies and consulates
around the world which employ 220 diplomats. The Zagreb
headquarters employ 180 diplomats and a 150-member staff.
"It is up to diplomacy to set the foundations for security and
cooperation in a region which for the past nine years has been
synonymous with conflicts and divisions. Had the diplomacy of big
and influential countries listened to diplomats in some small
countries in this region, Croatia in particular, a harsh NATO armed
force threat could have ensured a peaceful break up of (the former)
Yugoslavia," Minister Granic said.
Only 0.7 percent of the budget goes to diplomacy in Croatia at
present, the foreign minister said, adding however that higher
means are required for good and effective diplomacy.
