NEW YORK, May 22 (Hina) - Croatia's Ambassador to the United Nations
on Friday discussed the Kosovo crisis with UN Deputy Secretary-
General Louise Frechette.
Simonovic said Croatia supported UN's peace efforts related to the
Kosovo crisis and wanted the establishment of long-term stability
in the entire south-east of Europe.
Frechette recently took over heading a crisis centre established at
the UN Secretariat to coordinate all activities related to the
Kosovo crisis. Croatia's ambassador offered Croatian government
assistance in endeavours to solve the crisis and the humanitarian
problems in Kosovo.
The UN deputy secretary-general thanked for the offer and explained
the UN was preparing to carry out its tasks in the implementation of
a peace solution currently being negotiated.
Speaking about overall stabilisation in south-east Europe,
Simonovic pointed to the importance of reaching as soon as possible
a solution to Prevlaka, a contentious issue between Croatia and
Yugoslavia, and completing succession proceedings related to the
former Yugoslav federation in line with international law.
Frechette said the UN appreciated Croatia's support in seeking
solutions for long-term regional stability.
Simonovic also took the opportunity to acquaint the UN official
with Yugoslavia's unjustified and unacceptable arrest of Croatian
journalist Antun Masle and the three-month extension of his
detention term in Montenegro.
The ambassador appealed to Frechette and the UN to take all possible
steps to urge Yugoslav authorities to release Masle as soon as
possible.
