ZAGREB, May 21 (Hina) - A spokesman for Croatia's ruling party, the
Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), on Friday told reporters
parliament could adopt a new electoral law in June if the Opposition
Six and the HDZ next week reached a consensus on the electoral
model.
The HDZ will attempt to reach a consensus with the six opposition
party group also regarding the date of the elections, spokesman
Ivan Ropus said, adding the elections could be expected to be
scheduled in early winter.
The ruling party recently motioned that elections be held between
Christmas and the New Year, to which the Opposition Six strongly
objected.
According to HDZ vice president Ivic Pasalic, a solution to the
electoral model issue will fortify Croatia's image in the world and
help dispel the numerous remarks levelled at the Croatian
government by international representatives, as was the case, he
said, in this week's report of the Organisation for Security and
Cooperation in Europe.
HDZ spokesman Ropus said Croatian President Franjo Tudjman's
decision of May 17 to recognise ranks to members of various armed
units on Croatian territory did not refer to Ustashi units. Ranks
would not be recognised to Chetnik unit members either, as was
speculated in some media, he added.
The decision's sixth article, interpreted by some as providing the
possibility of recognising ranks to former Ustashi, according to
Ropus refers to the former Territorial Defence and Croatia's
historical battle units.
Asked whether Josip Broz Tito could be acknowledged the marshall's
rank if his family requested so, Ropus said that Tito undeniably was
a historical figure, also with credits for Croatia. However,
"according to his overall activity he doesn't meet the conditions
from the President's decision," the spokesman said.
According to Pasalic, President Tudjman's decision is primarily
based in the continuation of the all-Croatian reconciliation
policy, which is aimed at preventing new conflicts within the
Croatian national corps.
