ZAGREB, May 18 (Hina) - The Croatian government had not been
previously notified about operations in which NATO aircraft
discarded unused bombs into the Adriatic Sea on their return to
bases, given that those are international waters, the government's
Media and Public Relations Office said on Tuesday.
After initial reports on such activities, the Croatian government
via the Foreign Ministry requested a NATO statement on the matter.
NATO immediately notified the Croatian government, in keeping with
good mutual cooperation, emphasising the bomb-discarding was the
usual procedure of discarding unused and deactivated weaponry into
international sea-waters previously marked for this purpose and
recorded in navigation maps in 1992.
NATO confirmed the procedure is undertaken in a very limited number
of cases, when both the aircraft and the pilot are in danger.
NATO recently notified the entire public about the procedure via
the Italian armed force.
Upon receiving an official NATO report, the Croatian government
will discuss the issue at its next session.
