with his Croatian counterpart Ivo Sanader in Rome on Saturday.
The meeting, which was part of regular consultations between the
two countries, focused on the Kosovo crisis. The two officials
stressed the need for finding a political solution to the crisis,
which would be in line with a statement adopted by the G8 group at a
recent meeting in Bonn.
It was said that the Croatian and Italian Foreign Ministers Mate
Granic and Lamberto Dini should meet soon.
Italy appreciates Croatia's role in international efforts to solve
the Kosovo crisis and it supports its wish to enter Euro-Atlantic
associations, Ranieri said.
Sanader informed his host that Croatia could adopt changes to its
election law by May 17, the date of a meeting of European Union
ministers.
Sanader assessed as very important the fact that Italy supported
its proposal that the European Union, within its regional approach
towards south-east European countries, take into account
individual characteristics of every country.
Sanader and Ranier today also agreed on facilitating traffic of
Croatian citizens on the Italian border by treating them as EU
citizens.
Italy's Defence Minister Carlo Scognamiglio is to visit Zagreb soon
