SPLIT, May 8 (Hina) - The Split County on Saturday marked the Day of
Croatian-Austrian Friendship in the presence of numerous guests
from Croatia and Austria.
The event was organised in honour of a former Austrian vice
chancellor and foreign minister and an honorary citizen of Split,
Alois Mock.
Mock and his wife have been on holiday to the Split County for
several days.
At the Split ceremony, county and city officials presented their
guest with a charter of gratitude for his help to Croatia.
Mock held a lecture on the purpose of European integration.
Croatia is our neighbouring country and it belongs to Europe; its
progress benefits both Austria and the whole of Europe, he said.
The aim of European integration is to make Europe a continent of
peace and prevent the recurring, long-lasting violent conflicts in
the area.
Speaking about the European Union, Mock said a centralised Europe
would present a threat, especially to small countries. What has to
be achieved is a Europe of agreement, cooperation and unity because
it is the only guarantee of peace, he assessed.
