OSIJEK, Apr 14 (Hina) - The municipal leadership of Beli Manastir
and Osijek-Baranja County Prefect Branimir Glavas on Wednesday
assessed the recent incident in which ten youths of Serb and
Croatian nationality took part, was an instance disturbing public
peace order which ended in physical injuries, and that it was given
unnecessary political connotations.
Croatian Homeland War veterans from the eastern Croatian town of
Beli Manastir on Tuesday requested the replacement of the local
police superintendent, dissatisfied with his actions after a group
of Serbs beat up a group of Croat returnee youths on April 9.
They especially protested against the behaviour of the police, who,
they said, took a Croat youth who had to go to hospital as a result of
the beating while he was being given medical help, and interrogated
him for two hours at the police station.
The head of the Osijek-Baranja police, Dubravko Jezercic, said an
investigation determined the police "did not act tactlessly, nor
did it abuse or exceed its authority."
Glavas told the Beli Manastir leadership such circumstances called
for calm interventions, and should not be given political
connotations.
