WASHINGTON, March 30 (Hina) - The working visit of Croatian Foreign
Minister Mate Granic to Washington, at the invitation of US
Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, is part of a mosaic
representing a new stage in the Croatian-American relations,
Croatia's Ambassador to the United States Miomir Zuzul said on
Tuesday.
It is certain that developments in Kosovo and the ongoing NATO
military operation, which has entered its second phase, would be
the main topic during the Albright-Granic talks on Wednesday, Zuzul
said.
Croatia has supported NATO in using all available sources to make
the Yugoslav government accept the proposed peace plans. Because it
is in the immediate neighbourhood with Yugoslavia, Croatia has
requested certain guarantees from the United States in case of
undesired escalation of the Kosovo conflict, he added.
As regards the Kosovo operation, Croatia is in permanent contact
with various levels of authority in the United States and in NATO,
Zuzul said. "Minister Granic's visit will be an opportunity to
continue the dialogue and consultations", he added.
Croatia undoubtedly expects its getting closer to NATO, in the
start through the Partnership for peace programme. Conditions for
that exist and the current events could confirm to NATO member-
states the importance of Croatia's admission.
Granic's talks with Albright and the US special envoy for the
implementation of the Dayton agreement, Robert Gelbard, will also
tackle the most important issues regarding bilateral relations.
Ambassador Zuzul expressed satisfaction with the signing of
contracts with the US bank Exim and company Enron.
"Apart from their direct economic effects, these contracts are
important because they clearly demonstrate Croatia's openness to
foreign, in this case, American investors", Zuzul said.
