CRO GOVT TO SOLVE TENANCY RIGHTS ISSUE IN DANUBE REGION SOON

VUKOVAR, March 30 (Hina) - An assistant to the Croatian Reconstruction and Development Minister and president of the State Housing Commission, Stjepan Sterc, on Tuesday said the Government would soon adopt a regulation on tenancy rights in the Croatian Danubian area. According to the regulation, which is to be discussed by the Government at its next session as early as next week, all tenancy rights holders from 1991 would be granted the right of protected tenants. If within three months these persons do not contact Croatian authorities regarding the regulation of their rights or are late one month with moving into their flats, they will lose the status of protected tenants. In that case, the Ministry of Reconstruction and Development will automatically become the owner of the flats. If within three months these persons do not contact Croatian authorities regarding the regulation of their rights or are late one month with moving into their flats, they will lose the status of protected tenants. In that case, the Ministry of Reconstruction and Development will automatically become the owner of the flats. Flats in the Danube region are currently state-owned and are managed by the Government Commission for State-Owned Property. After protected tenants have enjoyed their status for a certain period of time, they will be able to obtain the permanent right of ownership of the said flats, with no obligation to buy them, Sterc said at a meeting with local officials in Vukovar. He added the Ministry of Reconstruction and Development had given up the purchase of flats in order to stimulate the demographic revival of and return to the Danubian area. There are about 6,000 flats in Vukovar. The Ministry of Reconstruction and Development has so far reconstructed and handed over 1,142 flats to tenancy rights holders. Most of these flats do not have central heating or warm water and 48 of them are not equipped with water, electricity and sewerage systems. Another problem is a large number of illegal occupants of flats. (hina) jn rml
