The head of the institution for the organisation of the Second World
Military Games in Croatia, Lieutenant-General Josip Lucic, said
during Thursday's meeting that 77 countries with about 8,500
athletes had so far confirmed their participation in the August
event.
The second round for submitting applications is under way, so that
about 10,000 participants from 90 countries can be expected at the
Games, Gen. Lucic added.
Although we were chosen for the organisation of the games a year
ago, we have to do a job which normally takes some five years.
However, being aware of our abilities I believe that the Games will
be organised successfully, he said.
Most of venues and facilities necessary for this occasion were
built for the 1987 University Games, and they should be just
renovated.
Works on the western and northern stand of the Maksimir stadium as
well as the adjustment of the Mladost stadium will be completed
prior to the beginning of the Second World Military Games.
The organisation of the Games is a very demanding task,
particularly in the area of accommodation and transportation. We
shall help as much as we can and as much as are allowed by financial
possibilities, said Zagreb Mayor Marina Matulovic-Dropulic.
