ZAGREB, March 25 (Hina) - "We don't want the situation in Russia to
happen in Croatia", a union leader said at a rally staged in Zagreb
on Thursday by workers protesting against irregular payment of
salaries.
The president of the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of
Croatia (SSSH), Davor Juric, was referring to last year's economic
collapse in Russia.
The protest, held under the motto "No work without pay" in Zagreb's
Sports Square, gathered about 5,000 members of the Croatian union
of workers in agricultural, food-processing and tobacco industry
and water management (PPDIV).
Warning that 132,000 Croatian workers were working without
salaries, Juric said the SSSH had been campaigning for the regular
payment of salaries for two years.
The SSSH, which is the largest trade union, was prompted to today's
action by the warnings of their colleagues from international union
organisations saying the peak of the Russian economic crisis had
been preceded by irregular payment of salaries on a mass scale.
The rally heard requests to the Government and Croatian National
Sabor to form a national fund for guaranteed salaries, respect the
right of unions to strike against irregular salaries and draw a
clear strategy of Croatia's development as a social state and the
state of the rule of law.
The meeting, with workers carrying placards with messages against
tycoon and authorities, ended peacefully around 1 pm.
