ZAGREB, March 25 (Hina) - Since the very beginning we have been
advocating a political settlement to the Kosovo crisis in a
peaceful way. We express deep regret at Belgrade's rejection of the
agreement and support efforts of the international community to
make, by all means, FR Yugoslavia accept a peaceful solution of the
Kosovo issue, said Croatian Foreign Minister Mate Granic at
Thursday's session of the Government.
According to him, the whole of this part of Europe has been
destabilised due to the current situation and the NATO action.
Granic supported his claim by the fact that the air space over a
dozen countries was fully or partly closed.
Croatia is continuously being in the contact with the United
States, and President Franjo Tudjman has received the partnership-
oriented letter from Bill Clinton. Granic announced Tudjman's
response to Clinton for today.
He recalled that Belgrade had threatened to retaliate against
countries via whose territories attacks against Yugoslavia had
been coming.
In this regard, the Government has asked the United States to give
guarantees offered already to NATO and Partnership for Peace
member-countries, Premier Zlatko Matesa told the session.
He warned about great damage inflicted to the Croatian economy due
to the current situation. In this context, Economy Minister Nenad
Porges suggested that the Government should discuss alternative
proposals for the achievement of the planned economic aims at some
of its coming sessions.
Matesa added that Croatia was currently a country in the crisis area
and that, unfortunately, such perception could not be removed.
Therefore, it should not be expected that planned economic goals
might be accomplished.
