ZAGREB, March 23 (Hina) - The economy and economic problems were the
main topics of the question hour with which the Croatian
Parliament's House of Counties commenced its 26th session in Zagreb
on Tuesday.
Answering to a question of Ante Djelalija of the Croatian
Democratic Union (HDZ), Croatian Premier Zlatko Matesa said the
economy in war-ravaged areas is the priority of the Government, but
management and businessmen of companies in those regions should try
to draw foreign investors and strategic partners since there had
been enough assistance from the State.
In order to improve the economic situation in Osijek-Baranja
County, the Government has invested means that equal 30 budgets of
that county, in the last two years. It earmarked 540 million kuna
(approximately 77 million US$) in the rehabilitation of companies
and 580 million kuna (about 80 million dollars) via the Croatian
Bank for Reconstruction and Development (HBOR). The Government
will continue to help in the rehabilitation of firms in the area,
Matesa said in response to Vilim Herman of the Liberal Party (LS).
The Government is expecting the proposal of the Jadranska Bank and
the Sibenik County on the establishment of a new shipping company,
the successor to the Sibenik-based "Slobodna Plovidba". The
Government is poised to give collateral for the purchase of new
ships, Matesa answered to Pasko Bubalo of the HDZ.
Considering the daily commuters to neighbouring Slovenia, who are
increasingly being denied work permits by Ljubljana, a Croatian
Deputy Labour Minister, Vera Babic, said the Government could not
do much more than it had already done before.
The issue of the daily migration is to be arranged by an agreement on
employment, but prior to that it is necessary to arrange the
question of border and local border traffic. Slovenia is insisting
on settlement of some other issues and until it is not settled the
question of daily migrants could not be addressed, Babic told the
upper house.
The by-pass around Split, namely its Solin-Klis section is to open
before summer, the Prime Minister announced answering a question of
Zvonimir Puljic of the HDZ.
