ZAGREB, March 23 (Hina) - The Croatian commission for the UNESCO (UN
Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation) were on Monday
acquainted with a preliminary design for the solution of the
problem of drinking water, the environmental protection and
guidelines for the viable tourism and urban development of the town
of Omisalj on the Croatian island of Krk, which was drawn within the
UNESCO project "Urban Development And Drinking Waters Supplies:
The Problem of Small Coastal Towns".
The conceptual plan for Omisalj was presented by the head of the
UNESCO project, Philippe Pypaert.
Omisalj is currently the only Croatian town to be included in this
interdisciplinary project led by the UNESCO European Office For
Science and Technology, based in Venice.
The interdisciplinary approach is especially important for Omisalj
because of its specific problems. This town is surrounded by plants
of the Adriatic oil pipe-line, the airport and seaport facilities
that pose a threat for the town's environment and prevent its urban
and tourist development, Pypaert explained.
Therefore several UNESCO offices and university teams were
included in drawing the conceptual plan for the settlement of
problems such as the provision of the drinking water for the town,
the alleviation of the visual impact of the neighbouring oil
industry plants as well as the inclusion of the rich archaeological
site "Fulfinium" and remains of the medieval town in the tourist
offer of Omisalj.
The UNESCO basic design could be used for preparing proposals for
the viable development of Omisalj that are necessary for inviting
foreign creditors, like the European Bank for the Development and
Reconstruction (EBRD), to invest in this Croatian town.
So far, the project has been financed mostly by non-payable funds of
the Venice-based UNESCO office, and partly by the Omisalj
municipality, the Croatian Ambassador to the UNESCO, Vesna Jurkic-
Girardi said adding that the future of the project would depend on
the financial backing of the local authorities and a few Croatian
ministries and state offices.
