ZAGREB, Feb 26 (Hina) - On Thursday night, Dubrovnik police
arrested two men suspected of having attacked two reporters of the
"Jutarnji list" daily earlier the same day.
The head of the "Jutarnji list" office in Dubrovnik and a
photographer, Jadran Kapor and Mateo Rilovic respectively, were
attacked on Thursday afternoon on the island of Lopud near
Dubrovnik (southern Croatia), while on duty. Rilovic sustained
grave injuries to his head and had to stay in hospital.
The police reported the attackers had been identified on the basis
of Kapor's statement.
"Jutarnji list" reported that Rilovic and Kapor visited Lopud "to
investigate the alleged illegal construction of the house of
Assistant Defence Minister Marinko Kresic".
Kapor told Hina that he and Rilovic on Wednesday stayed in Dubrovnik
to investigate whether General Kresic had a construction permit and
all necessary documents, and on Thursday went to Lopud to take
pictures of the house.
Shortly after their arrival, they were attacked on "a public road",
said Kapor.
"We were attacked from behind by two men, of whom one had a wood
stick and the other an iron bar, with which they hit the
photographer on the head, after he had made two shots. Then they
took my cellular phone and Rilovic's camera. They made us show our
papers and after more than an hour of harassment, they escorted us
to the ship bound for Dubrovnik, returned my phone but kept the
camera", said Kapor.
Along with "Jutarnji list", the incident was protested also by the
Croatian Journalists' Association and the Journalists' Union.
"We expect the police and the authorities...to finally do something
because this is not only about the protection of our profession but
the protection of the right of the public to learn all relevant
information".
"The fact that such incidents are becoming more and more frequent
does not mean that the public has to get used to it as if it were
something normal. We therefore request that the attackers and their
instructors be adequately, and most severely punished", the two
organisations said in a joint statement.
