SPLIT SPLIT, Feb 22 (Hina) - The "Mediterranean and the Mediterranean World in the time of Philip II" book by a French scholar, Fernard Braudel (1902-1986), was presented in Split on Monday evening. The promotion of this two-volume
book of one of the most eminent European historians in this century was organised by the Split branch of the Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences, Split University and the Zagreb-based French Institute. This book is considered among most important historiographic works in 20th century and a basic book for the studies of the Mediterranean. The first edition of this book was published in 1945, while the second revised edition of Braudel's work appeared in 1965. A French historian Jacques Revel, who has continued Braudel's
research, Professor Ivo Petrinovic, Ivo Babic who is the Vice-
Chancellor of Split University, Professors Slobodan Prosperov
Novak and Nikola Viskovic addressed the gathered at Monday's event
in Split.
They pointed to the importance of Braudel's works for the
Mediterranean identity of Croatia. The French scholar was
delighted at the archives in Dubrovnik and mentioned the city of
Split in his works on the Mediterranean.
Therefore, to publish "Mediterranean and the Mediterranean World
in the time of Philip II ("Sredozemlje i sredozemni svijet u doba
Filipa II)" in Croatia is of the exceptional importance.
The book was promoted in Zagreb on 20 February.
