ZAGREB, Feb 4 (Hina) - The Open Society of Croatia institute
invested US$853,000 in different educational programmes for
students and teachers in 1998, and is to invest about the same
amount this year, the director of the educational programme, Vesna
Mihokovic-Puhovski, told a press conference on Thursday.
Even though the programmes include several dozen thousands of
students and teachers in Croatia, the Society is facing
difficulties while implementing the programmes. Educational
authorities, including several education institutions, refuse to
cooperate, Mihokovic-Puhovski said.
The goal of the educational programmes is to educate youth who will
act independently as intellectuals, and make them socially
responsible and politically aware.
In 1999, several long-standing educational programmes of the
Society will be replaced with new programmes, such as the new
programme for children with special needs, the school development
programme and education for Romany. Programme for the additional
education of teachers, scholarships for students with financial
problems, English as a second language programme, student
exchange, etc. will continue.
Despite the lack of support from the Croatian Education Ministry,
the Open Society cooperates with many experts and institutes which
recognise the quality of the programme, Mihokovi-Puhovski said.
She added some participants of the programme were often exposed to
pressures and were forced to hide their cooperation with the
Society.
