ZAGREB, Jan 13 (Hina) - Croatian society has great potential, and the President and the Government have great responsibilities, chairwoman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Helle Degn, told a news conference Wednesday. "The Government of Croatia has had the opportunity to present the situation here to me and my delegation over three days. The overall impression at the end of my visit is that the Croatian society has great potential and that the President and the Government have great responsibilities," Degn said concluding her three-day visit to Croatia. During her stay, Degn visited Zagreb and the eastern Croatian Danubian region, and held talks with representatives of Croatian authorities and the Opposition. "In my various meetings, I was able to have frank discussions on a number of major issues, including: reconciliation and the return process, the electoral law and the media situation," she said. Degn assessed that insecurity could still be felt in the Danubian region. "While there is no doubt that the Croatian Government has worked to improve the situation in the Danube Region, very often the efforts and intentions are not reflected in a practical way on the ground," Degn said. She added that without the presence of OSCE in the field, the situation would be worse. As regards the electoral law about which Degn held talks with representatives of the ruling party in Croatia and representatives of the Opposition, she said she had received conviction from both sides that an agreement on the necessary reforms would be reached in time, before the next elections. The situation at the state television continues to cause concern, Degn said. She added she supported the recommendations by the OSCE Mission in Croatia and by the Council of Europe on reforms of the Croatian television. Degn will submit a report on her visit to Croatia to the Council of Europe's Parliamentary Assembly in Strasbourg at the end of the month, the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly and the OSCE Troika.
