successful countries in transition, Croatian National Bank
Governor Marko Skreb said at the end of a three-day conference on
economic transition in Washington on Wednesday.
The conference was organised by the International Monetary Fund
Institute.
Compared to the other 20 countries, whose representatives attended
the conference, Croatia is by macroeconomic indicators and the
efficiency of its tax system, among the most successful. It has
relatively poor results in the foreign trade balance.
The Washington meeting tackled the danger of social tensions,
caused by huge differences which occurred in the course of
transition.
The second problem tackled by the meeting was the functioning of
institutions of the system.
Skreb said that in most countries, the legal framework suits the
needs of market economy however, in many countries the
implementation of laws is seriously lagging behind.
Following the end of the conference, Governor Skreb started
separated bilateral talks with IMF and World Bank representatives.
He is also to meet the heads of the US Ministries of the Treasury and
Federal Reserves.
Skreb announced a visit of an IMF delegation to Croatia next week.
The delegation will be led by the new head of the Croatian
department, Hans Flickenschield.
During the talks with World Bank officials and representatives of
US financial institutions, special attention will be paid to the
situation in Croatia's banking system, said Skreb.
