ZAGREB, Jan 21 (Hina) - A Croatian opposition MP on Thursday called
for the Croatian President's intervention and the Croatian
Interior Minister's resignation after reading in a weekly that the
Service for the Protection of the Constitutional Order (SZUP)
tapped his telephone conversations.
In an open letter forwarded to the Croatian President, the Interior
Minister, and the president of parliament's Committee for Internal
Affairs and State Security, MP Bozo Kovacevic called for the
establishment of a commission which would investigate the work of
intelligence services.
Kovacevic demands that Croatian President Franjo Tudjman, as head
of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), advocate the
immediate establishment of the said commission of inquiry, which is
also one of the chief demands of six opposition parties in
negotiations with the HDZ.
Kovacevic assumes President Tudjman is not informed about SZUP's
work, although by law he should be.
He also demands the resignation of Interior Minister Ivan Penic,
whom Kovacevic also wants to produce the order issued for the
tapping of his telephone conversations. He also wants the note
informing President Tudjman about the order.
Kovacevic demands of Ivan Milas, head of parliament's Committee for
Internal Affairs and State Security, to enable the committee's
members to view a SZUP document which, according to 'Nacional'
weekly, describes the tapping of telephone conversations of 78
citizens.
Kovacevic is a member of the Liberal Party.
