ZAGREB, Dec 8 (Hina) - The police action in the GRUPO media scandal
was executed in line with the law, an Interior Ministry spokesman
told Hina on Friday.
Spokesman Slavko Rako was quoting Minister Sime Lucin's response to
Djurdja Adlesic, the chairwoman of parliament's Committee on
Internal Affairs and National Security, who yesterday forwarded
Lucin a written request asking if this week's arrest of Ninoslav
Pavic, Vinko Grubisic and another five suspects in the GRUPO
scandal had been carried out in line with the law and rule books,
given that special police units were engaged.
"The entire police action in that case was based on provisions of
the Penal Code and the Criminal Proceedings Law," said Rako.
The engagement of special police units and the search of Pavic's
flat and office urged his lawyer Vesna Alaburic to press charges
against Minister Lucin.
Adlesic was quoted in today's Jutarnji list daily as saying that
after the GRUPO scandal either prisons should be filled or
resignations tendered. She also requested an explanation from
Justice Minister Stjepan Ivanisevic for the arrest and release of
Pavic, Grubisic, and the rest.
"The arrest of those people is a serious act and a serious reason
should be behind it," Adlesic was quoted.
The GRUPO scandal broke out after Republika daily accused Pavic,
Grubisic, a co-owner of OTV television station, media magnate
Miroslav Kutle, and Ivic Pasalic, a Croatian Democratic Union party
deputy of attempting to gain control over most Croatian media via
the GRUPO association. Of nine suspects, Pavic and Grubisic were
detained for two days. Both were set free on Wednesday after the
prosecutor's office decided against an investigation owing to
insufficient evidence.
