KOTOR, Dec 2 (Hina) - Montenegrin President Milo Djukanovic, under
whose auspices a ceremony marking the end of reconstruction works
on the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St. Tryphon in Boka Kotorska Bay
was held on Friday in Kotor, told Hina on Saturday the celebration
was a "big event for Montenegro."
Djukanovic said he was glad that the event was held under his
auspices.
The Kotor cathedral is the most important sacral building in the
rich heritage of Kotor and Montenegro, reconstructed after many
years, Djukanovic said, expressing hope that there would be more
similar works in the future.
That way, we will build Montenegro's increasingly rich cultural
mosaic stone by stone, which will legalise Montenegro as a member of
the civilised community of European peoples, he said.
Montenegro's multiculturality has passed the hardest test of time
in the past ten years, which is an important asset for the country's
multiethnic and multireligious future, based on the model of a
united Europe, he said.
Asked about his view about the future of the Montenegrin-Croatian
relations, Djukanovic said he was pleased to have participated in
the Zagreb Summit. The summit was held in a Zagreb renewed in the
European fashion and it was a meeting of a developed west Europe and
a slightly backward south-east Europe.
The Zagreb Summit was organised splendidly and the meeting is an
important milestone on the road of stability and democratic
prosperity of south-east Europe, he said.
South-east Europe could become an integral part of the European
continent not only because of its geographic position but because
of its economic, cultural and democratic contributions as well.
As regards the Croatia-Montenegro cooperation, there are many
reasons why coexistence and good neighbourly relations should
continue, the Montenegrin president said.
"I am confident that perhaps some of the most difficult events in
our more recent history are finally behind us, and that we will have
the wisdom and tolerance to overcome them in a civilised manner,"
Djukanovic said, expressing hope the cooperation would be of mutual
benefit.
An exhibition entitled "The Cathedral of St. Tryphon in Kotor -
Restoration and Research 1983-2000" was opened in the cathedral on
Friday.
