ZAGREB, Nov 29 (Hina) - We are surprised and disappointed by
statements given by the Croatian First Deputy Prime Minister Goran
Granic, because he knows the prosecution is carrying out
investigations into crimes committed against Croats in 1991,
spokeswoman for the Prosecutor's Office of the International
Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), Florence
Hartmann, told Hina Wednesday.
Although this has not been publicly stated, we are carrying out
investigations about Dubrovnik and eastern Slavonia, Hartmann said
in comment on Granic's claims issued on Zagreb's weekly Globus.
In his interview to the weekly, Granic said the ICTY must
consistently keep in consideration everything that had happened in
this region, it cannot process what happened in 1995 without
looking into what had happened from 1991 until 1995.
It is untrue that there are no investigations about crimes
committed against Croats in 1991, Dokmanovic has been indicted for
crimes in 1991 in Vukovar, Sljivancanin, Radic and Mrksic for
crimes in 1991 ... I can confirm ongoing investigations both about
crimes in Dubrovnik and eastern Slavonia in 1991, Hartmann said.
She stressed, however, there was no conflict with Granic.
We are not carrying out the investigations in a chronological
manner, but it depends on when we receive evidence, and it is true
that at this time we do not have a complete picture of the war in the
former Yugoslavia, she said.
The prosecution officially does not reveal information about
ongoing investigations, but reporters do selectively publish
information on investigations, which makes the image of the
Tribunal's work inaccurate.
Some confidential information about investigations into crimes
from 1995 have leaked into the media, but not information about
those committed in 1991, so the public tends to draw an inaccurate
image of the work of the prosecution, Hartmann asserted.
The full picture on the war in the former Yugoslavia will be
available only in 2004, when we expect to have completed all the
investigations, she added.
