ZAGREB, Nov 21 (Hina) - About a hundred most persistent workers of
the meat industry 'Zagrepcanka', who have been staging protest
rallies and blocking Zagreb roads for ten days, on Tuesday morning
staged a peaceful rally in front of the Economy Ministry building,
demanding that their representatives meet Economy Minister Goranko
Fizulic.
The protesters request the government and Economy Ministry to grant
the payment of their September and October salaries and of
severance pays for workers who will be laid off after the beginning
of bankruptcy proceedings.
The protesters came in front of the ministry building after a
meeting held this morning in a former 'Zagrepcanka' shop in Heinzel
Street, where they were informed by the Zagreb commissioner of the
Croatian Association of Workers Unions (HUS), Mario Ivekovic, that
the first bankruptcy hearing at the Commercial Court could start at
11am today.
Ivekovic informed the gathered about his stand regarding the rally
the HUS said it would stage on the day of the Zagreb summit, November
24. He suggested that all dissatisfied workers from Zagreb
companies gather on Friday afternoon in the Cvjetni Square in
downtown Zagreb because the police had restricted access to the
Intercontinental hotel, where the Zagreb Summit would be held.
'Zagrepcanka' workers agreed with Ivekovic's proposal and the HUS
will make a final decision on the place and time of the rally at a
session to be held today.
