ZAGREB, Nov 20 (Hina) - Croatian and Slovene police representatives on Monday discussed the promotion of their cooperation in attempts to cut the number of cases of illegal migrations via the Croatian-Slovene border, as in the last

Describing the current cooperation as more than good, an assistant to Croatian Interior Minister, Vladimir Faber, said both parties concluded that it would be necessary to activate all human and technical resources to alleviate the pressure of waves of emigrants from the East passing thorough Yugoslavia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia and Slovenia towards the West. ZAGREB, Nov 20 (Hina) - Croatian and Slovene police representatives
on Monday discussed the promotion of their cooperation in attempts
to cut the number of cases of illegal migrations via the Croatian-
Slovene border, as in the last three months the number of illegal
emigrants climbed by even 100 percent.
Describing the current cooperation as more than good, an assistant
to Croatian Interior Minister, Vladimir Faber, said both parties
concluded that it would be necessary to activate all human and
technical resources to alleviate the pressure of waves of emigrants
from the East passing thorough Yugoslavia, Bosnia-Herzegovina,
Croatia and Slovenia towards the West.
Since 1995 the number of illegal migrants has risen between 20 and
30 percent, while in the last three months it climbed by 100
percent, Faber added.
Commenting on concrete agreement with Slovenes, he said they agreed
on continuation of exchange of information at the ministerial level
on the implementation of bilateral contracts on the acceptation of
persons at the frontier and on drawing up a monthly report on the
structure of illegals. Police stations near the border will
intensify their cooperation and notify one another of every case of
the detection of illegal migrants. For the improvement of the
police control over the frontier, Croatian police officers will
work together with Slovene colleagues at sites where larger groups
of illegals are noticed, if necessary, Faber said.
Faber also complained that the asylum centre for foreigners was
overcrowded and that it would be necessary to establish yet another
centre of this kind in Croatia.
He added that the Croatian Interior Ministry had drawn up a law on
asylum which would soon be adopted and which was in accordance with
European standards.
Slovene police director-general Marko Pogorevc said his country
should no more be the victim of illegal migrants, who were mainly
arriving from Bosnia and Croatia. This year of some 30,000 illegal
migrants registered in Slovenia, 20,000 have arrived via Croatia.
The largest number of them are Iranians and Turks.
Pogorevc voiced optimism regarding the cooperation with Croatian
policemen in prevention of illegal border crossings.
