SPLIT, Nov 17 (Hina) - An adviser to the special coordinator of the
Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe said on Friday it was
possible an international headquarters for disasters in south-
eastern Europe could be located in Divulje near the southern
Adriatic city of Split.
A Stability Pact team of experts is touring countries in Southeast
Europe and the final decision on the headquarters location will be
made by the end of the year, said Stefano Pontecorvo, the director
of the Pact's third round table, which tackles security issues and
regional cooperation.
Pontecorvo today opened a Croatian Interior Ministry workshop in
Split as part of a table conference which addressed an initiative
for readiness and prevention in case of disasters.
The aim of the conference, attended by representatives of 16
European countries and the United States, is to develop a
cooperation web among countries in the region to ensure efficacious
action in case of large-scale disasters and accidents.
Interior Minister Sime Lucin reminded that Croatia every year waged
a major battle with wildfires, often forced to seek international
assistance in putting the flames under control.
"Disasters know no state boundaries. This is why we think it is
imperative to create a web of national structures to jointly plan
disaster protection measures," he said.
The participants in the conference toured the entire Divulje area,
getting acquainted with the possibilities on offer.
Divulje, 20 km north of Split, is the home of a big military air
base.
