BERLIN, Nov 11 (Hina) - The German PEN Centre has awarded a "Hermann Kersten" medal to Croatian publisher and publicist Nenad Popovic for his work as a publisher over the past several years, says Saturday's issue of the "Sueddeutsche
Zeitung" daily. According to the PEN Centre, Popovic was awarded for having managed to gather creative journalists and intellectuals from the territory of the former Yugoslavia despite the war danger, thus contributing to the development of the culture of civil society. Popovic, the daily says, is a member of "Group 99", which includes journalists and writers from former Yugoslavia, who at the 1999 Frankfurt book fair adopted an appeal urging "speedy democratic reconstruction in Serbia." Along with the medal, Popovic will also receive DM20,000.(hina) rml
