ZAGREB, Nov 10 (Hina) - The Croatian parliament's House of
Representatives completed its session this week and will again be
in session next week when it is expected to resume a discussion on a
draft strategy for the modernisation of the Croatian Railways
(HZ).
During the first part of the debate most MPs asked for the
elaboration of a long-term strategy for the development of the
railway traffic, besides the aforementioned strategy.
Many deputies also insisted on a programme for the solution of
problems of employees with the HZ who would be redundant during the
rationalisation. Some also asked that the Government should give an
explanation in detail about reasons for a decision to discontinue
the traffic along some railway lines.
The bench of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) described the
strategy as defensive and cautioned that the dismissal of workers
could affect the security and safety of the traffic if the entire
company were not modernised before.
The bench of the Croatian Party of Rights/Croatian Christian
Democratic Union (HSP/HKDU) was against a plan that a profitable
sector in cargo transport be privatised, while the infrastructure
and passenger traffic should remain on the burden of the state
budget. According to this bench, it would be real to expect from a
possible concession-holder for the cargo transport sector to take
over the duty to maintain the HZ infrastructure as well.
The bench of the Istrian Democratic Alliance (IDS) cautioned that
the closing of certain railroads could threaten the development of
some Croatian regions.
The lower house will resume the debate on the matter next Wednesday
when it also should consider a package of four tax laws.
