ZAGREB, Nov 7 (Hina) - In the first six months this year, some 58,000 Croatian entrepreneurs had income by 1.7 billion higher as against their total expenditure. Although the amount is not impressive, financial results in business in the Croatian economy are better in comparison to last year. According to figures released by the Payment Operations Institute (ZAP), 57,832 business people who employ 710,000 workers realised the income of 135.5 billion kuna, or by 11.7 percent more compared to the first half of 1999. The growth in total income was faster than a rise in expenditure which amounted to 133.8 billion kuna (by nine percent higher as against the first half of 1999). The growth in total income was faster than a rise in expenditure which amounted to 133.8 billion kuna (by nine percent higher as against the first half of 1999). One hundred kuna of expenditure is covered by 101.3 kuna of earnings. The structure of the income also shows positive trends. The income from the sale abroad rose above the average with the 31.5 percent increase and its portion in the entire structure of earnings rose from 12.1 to 14.6 percent. According to the ZAP, the state-run sector in the ownership achieved income smaller than expenditure and this unfavourable difference was 1.4 billion kuna in the first half of 2000. The private sector had the positive difference of 3.4 billion kuna between the income and expenditure. Costs for staff which are 14.7 percent at the level of the overall entrepreneurship come to even 23.3 percent of total expenditure in state-run companies. A dominant business activity of Croatian entrepreneurs is still trade. Of the registered entrepreneurs, 44 percent is in trade with 36 percent share in the total income. The manufacturing industry which was a main activity in 1990s fell to 14.5 percent in the entire number of business people and its share in the total income is some 33 percent. One interesting fact is that almost a half of the entire income and expenditure in the Croatian economy was made in Zagreb where almost 24,000 out of 57,832 business people covered by the ZAP research, are working.
