attended the marking of the eighth anniversary of the ninth guard brigade Vukovi (Wolves). Accompanied by Defence Minister Jozo Rados and Armed Forces Chief-Of-Staff General Petar Stipetic, Mesic laid a wreath by a monument to 56 members of Vukovi killed during the early 1990s Homeland Defence War. Addressing the brigade, President Mesic said that parliament, the government, and he as the president of the republic expected the brigade to be the guarantor of a safe and peaceful development of Croatia. Defence Minister Rados said it was necessary to create a capable, modern, and responsible Croatian armed force, and orderly and responsible one in which skills are the criterion of progress, all in view of preserving the country's stability.
