The publisher Celeber decided to rush-release the Croatian
translation of the anthology after 15 of its featured authors
decided to make a guest-appearance at FAK, a literary festival
opening in Zagreb on Tuesday.
Ben Richards and Matt Thorne will present the book and the new
literary movement, which includes the best-selling author Alex
Garland. They will sign copies of the book and read excerpts.
Announcing their attendance, the Croatian edition's editor and FAK
selector Borivoj Radakovic said on Monday the publishing of "All
Hail the New Puritans" had rocked the British literary scene, and
pointed to the similarity between the New Puritans and the Croatian
authors who will attend the festival.
The New Puritans' ten-point manifesto was inspired by Dogme 95, the
manifesto by contemporary Danish filmmakers, also included in the
anthology. The authors featured have pledged to stick to the
narrative form, avoid poetic forms, and be open to the creation of
new genres. They will adhere to textual simplicity, clarity and
grammatical purity.
They consider their works a historical document, and consequently
all the products, places, artists and objects referred to have to
actually exist. The texts are set and dated in the present day.
The New Puritans refuse speculations on the past and the future.
They are moralists whose integrity of expression is above and
beyond any commitment to form.
Besides Garland, Richards and Thorne, the anthology features
stories by Toby Litt, Scarlett Thomas, Rebecca Ray, Nicholas
Blincoe, Daren King, Bo Fowler, Candida Clarke, Geoff Dyer, Simon
Lewis, Matthew Branton, Tony White and Anna Davis.
