with regret. We are convinced there is absolutely no reason for such
actions," the Ministry said in a statement issued Wednesday.
Disgruntled by the government's abolishing of quantity customs
tariffs for mercantile potato, some hundred potato growers from
Medjimurje staged a protest from noon until 2pm on the border
crossing with Hungary.
The Ministry stressed the temporary abolishing of quantity customs
for potato did not mean the abolishing of other customs, because the
tariff of 20 per cent for potatoes remained.
The price of potato on markets and wholesale markets have
noticeably increased this year, almost to double last year's price.
The growth in price came about due to the extraordinarily
unfavourable weather conditions which caused a plunge in potato
production.
Potato growers in Medjimurje where half the market surplus of
mercantile potato is being produced, hold that the production price
of two kuna per kilo was not too high. They claim the government
should ensure that the price does not grow more than 100 per cent on
the path from producer to consumer.
