ZAGREB, Oct 12 (Hina) - The HSS believes it is monstrous to say "that
the incumbent authorities are systematically damaging the dignity
of the Homeland Defence War," an official of the ruling coalition's
six parties told Thursday's session of parliament's House of
Representatives.
Luka Trconic of the Croatian Peasants' Party was addressing a
debate on draft declarations on the dignity of the homeland war, one
moved by the HSS, the other by the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ),
the formerly ruling and now strongest opposition party.
The HSS sees the accusation as an attempt to square accounts with
the authorities which won January's elections and redefine the
voters' will, said Trconic. He doubts it will be possible to agree
in the debate owing to the HDZ draft and a recent proclamation which
called for early elections.
The HSS proposed a declaration which would examine whether bodies
of state authorities were indeed jeopardising the dignity of
Croatia's early 1990s war of independence from the former Yugoslav
federation.
Trconic quoted coalition partner Vlado Gotovac who said in a recent
interview the homeland war had been fully validated with the
establishment of internationally recognised Croatia and that the
real question was why it had to be discussed at all.
The HSS declaration urges common sense, tolerance, and words of
encouragement, and not the hard words mentioned in the HDZ
declaration, said Trconic.
He welcomed HDZ's wish that the debate overcome differences and
provide a common solution, but said it was going to be difficult
when the HDZ declaration asserted a "systematic criminalisation of
the Homeland Defence War, with frantic attacks, is being carried
out."
"There are people and institutions who never experienced the
Croatian state in their heart, but I believe you have gone too far,"
he told the HDZ, adding the homeland war's dignity was defended with
a functioning rule of law.
