LIOVIC: AGOTIC WRONGLY ADVISED MESIC TO RETIRE SEVEN GENERALS
ZAGREB, Oct 7 (Hina) - The president of the Croatian Disabled
Homeland War Veterans (HVIDRA) association, Marinko Liovic, told
reporters on Saturday the presidential advisor on military issues,
Imra Agotic, had without consultations, and probably because of his
less important contribution to the Homeland War, wrongly advised
Croatian President Stipe Mesic to retire seven generals a week
ago.
I believe that Agotic's advice to Mesic was wrong, Liovic said,
adding the decision, although in line with the law, was the most
drastic measure which could be imposed on the generals.
He forwarded a message to high-ranking officers advising them to
act sensibly or they would face suspension or court-martial if
similar acts were made.
The revision of HVIDRA's operation has not been completed yet,
Liovic said, adding that data on the association's operation had
been submitted to the parliament by the Veterans' Ministry.
Liovic dismissed those data, saying that HVIDRA was exempt from
paying postal charges last year so it was "impossible to spend a
million and a half kuna for postal charges as stated in the report."
Liovic believes the data were fabricated by someone from the ruling
coalition "to tarnish and negate our work since 1991, through the
war and to the present."
Liovic announced that HVIDRA would suggest to the Sabor that the Law
on Amnesty either be annulled or amended to include all Croatian
citizens, Serbs and Croats alike.
Speaking about the rights of disabled war veterans, Liovic said
their disability allowances and pensions had still not been
harmonised although this should have been done back in January.
Commenting on yesterday's information regarding the initiative by
the U.N.'s special envoy for the Balkans Carl Bildt that the new
Yugoslav president Vojislav Kostunica be invited to the upcoming
Zagreb summit, Liovic said Kostunica was not welcome in Croatia. He
did not say which measures HVIDRA members would launch if Kostunica
came.
