SI Secretary-General Lius Ayala said in Intercontinental hotel
that while Europe's socialists and social democrats were gathering
here, the people of Belgrade were doing the same, rallying in the
streets and opening hope for new times, .
"Ten years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, in neighbouring
Yugoslavia the wall has fallen in the citizens' mindset," said
Mirjana Feric-Vac on behalf of the host, Croatia's Social
Democratic Party (SDP).
"I believe the takeoff of democratic forces in Croatia has been an
incentive," she added.
Feric-Vac confirmed her party advocated Croatia's orientation
towards integration into Euro-Atlantic institutions and settling
internal issues on principles of social democracy.
The two-day Zagreb meeting, organised by the SDP and the SI, will
address European Union expansion, the Stability Pact for Southeast
Europe, and the situation in the Balkans. Participants will submit
reports on the situation in their countries.
The Socialist International (SI), established in 1951, gathers 143
political parties and organisations from around the world. Its goal
is to formalise the international organisation of the labour
movement in the world.
