ZAGREB, Oct 1 (Hina) - On 5 and 6 October Croatia will host heads of
regional governments of members of the Working Community of the
Danube River Area.
On 3 and 4 October, prior to the central event in Zagreb, economic
and cultural forums are to be held in Croatian eastern towns of
Osijek, Ilok and Vukovar, an official of the Croatian Foreign
Ministry announced last Wednesday.
This Community, established on 17 May 1990 in Vienna, gathers 22
members from 11 countries.
The intention of this group is to stimulate the cooperation of
regions in the Danube River basin in fields of economy, transport,
zoning, tourism, culture, science and environmental protection.
The 11th conference of the heads of regional governments in Zagreb
will be opened by Croatia's Premier Ivica Racan.
Participants in the Zagreb meeting are expected to adopt a few
resolutions on the clearance of the polluted Szamos, Tisa and
Danube waters. They will be notified of several interesting
interdisciplinary projects and called to contribute to efforts
aimed at re-establishment of the free navigation along the Danube.
On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the set-up of the
Community, the Croatian Foreign Ministry's diplomatic academy will
present a booklet on this community, i.e. its member-regions:
Vienna, Burgenland, Upper Austria and Lower Austria, Bulgaria's
Lovech, Montana, Russe and countries the Czech Republic, Moldava,
Slovakia and Croatia, Germany's Baden Wuerttenberg and Bavaria,
Romania's federation of Danube River areas, Hungary's Bacs-Kiskun,
Baranya, Budapest, Pest, Fejer, Gyor-Moson-Sopron, Komarom-
Esztergom and Tolna.
The group also includes the Republic of Serbia. Its membership,
however, was suspended in 1992 owing to its aggression against
Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina. In 1996, according to a decision
made in Baden, Serbia was re-admitted and got the right to
participate in the Community's work following its recognition of
Croatia and Bosnia.
This year, Croatia's chairmanship over the community ends, and the
Bulgarian region of Russe takes over it.
