ZAGREB, Sept 29 (Hina) - The Croatian Foreign Ministry agrees with
estimates by the community of democratic countries about the
victory of the candidate of the democratic opposition at
presidential elections in Yugoslavia.
This estimate is based on indicators of electoral results which
show the electorate's affiliation, the Ministry said in a statement
Friday.
The recognition of electoral results is an important act for the
stabilisation of the situation in Yugoslavia and its international
environment.
This gives an opportunity to Yugoslavia to truly develop
democratically and thus create a basis for cooperation with the
international community and its neighbours.
Croatia expresses hope that pursuant to the elections,
preconditions would be created for Yugoslavia's integration into
the international community and its organisation through the same
processes through which the other secessor countries of the former
Yugoslavia had been integrated, which will enable a final solution
to the issue of succession on the basis of equality of all secessor
countries, the statement said.
The Ministry expressed satisfaction with the fact that the Croat
minority in Yugoslavia achieved good results at local elections and
had, together with their coalition partners, contributed to the
success of the Opposition. It also expressed expectation that the
future authority would have a different attitude to the Croat
national minority which would contribute to the process of good
neighbourly relations.
The Ministry is convinced the affiliation for democracy is a
precondition for the development of normal neighbourly relations
based on the respect of territorial integrity and cooperation to
the benefit of citizens of both countries, the statement read.
In this regard, the establishment of Yugoslavia's full cooperation
with the international war crimes tribunal in The Hague is of
special importance.
The possibilities of integrating Yugoslavia into the international
community commits the democratic world to, at the same time, take
into account the credibility of democratic achievements which
would lead to a gradual lifting of sanctions, the Foreign Ministry
said in the statement.
