It is conspicuous that a period of a substantial increase in
Croatia's foreign debt has been since 1996. That year, the external

dollars. In the end of 1997, it amounted to 7.5 billion and in the
end of the following year it was over 9.6 billion.
An upward trend in the indebtedness is shown by data that a portion
of the foreign debt in the Gross Domestic Product rose from 24.2
percent in 1996, to 33.1 percent in 1997, 44.1 percent in 1998, and
48.4 percent in 1999.
The payment of the external debt in the export of goods and services
was 13.8 percent in 1997, 9.4 percent in 1998, and 29.5 percent last
year.
According to this June's figures, 41.9 percent of the entire debt
(i.e. 4.157 billion) referred to the state debt which included some
70 percent in bonds. Debts of companies and financial institutions
made up 32.3 percent (3.22 billion).
Banks made up 17.5 percent (1.73 billion) in the entire debt when
the debt of the central bank was 177 million (1.8 percent).
