ZAGREB, Sept 20 (Hina) - The association for women's rights
B.a.B.e. has requested the Croatian National Sabor to declare
September 22 the Day of the Prevention of Violence Against Women and
the year 2001 the Year of putting an end to the violence against
women.
Recalling that September 22 is the first anniversary of a triple
murder at the Zagreb Municipal Court, when a suspended police
officer Mate Oraskic killed judge Liljana Hvalec, attorney Hajra
Prohic and his former wife Gordana, and seriously wounded court
reporter Gordana Cvjetkovic, the association warned that no
request by women's non-governmental organisations was taken into
account at the time.
Ministers were not replaced and the state authorities refused to
declare a day of mourning on the day of the victims' burial and
establish the Day of the Prevention of Violence Against Women, the
association said, adding on September 22 all should commemorate the
women whom the primitive and militant state had failed to protect.
The association also said that its representatives would meet U.N.
Secretary-General Kofi Annan this October.
