ZAGREB, Sept 19 (Hina) - Croatia's Prime Minister Ivica Racan on Tuesday announced that in the coming few months the Government would make intensive efforts in the economic recovery of the country and in the settlement of issues
pertaining to war crimes and the fight against crime. This week the government is going to analyse its work, but for the time being there will be no big changes among the staff, he added. Asked about inflation and devaluation, the Premier promised there would be no upheavals as the Government was not going to miss its chance to recover the country from grave economic troubles. "The exchange rate of the kuna, however, will be more real in the long run," Racan was quoted by Croatian Radio as saying.
ZAGREB, Sept 19 (Hina) - Croatia's Prime Minister Ivica Racan on
Tuesday announced that in the coming few months the Government
would make intensive efforts in the economic recovery of the
country and in the settlement of issues pertaining to war crimes and
the fight against crime.
This week the government is going to analyse its work, but for the
time being there will be no big changes among the staff, he added.
Asked about inflation and devaluation, the Premier promised there
would be no upheavals as the Government was not going to miss its
chance to recover the country from grave economic troubles.
"The exchange rate of the kuna, however, will be more real in the
long run," Racan was quoted by Croatian Radio as saying.#L#
Commenting on some claims that inflation could rise to a 10-percent
rate, the Premier said he would see to it that inflation remain
below that rate.
As regards economic steps, Racan said the measures aimed at
stimulation of investment and development should be completed.
We must clear up economic ruins. It is important to complete reforms
in some sectors - for instance, in the shipbuilding industry,
public health and the pension insurance system, Racan said in an
interview he gave to a radio broadcast.
We are going to see the end of the fight against white-collar crime
and the settlement of issues regarding war crimes, as Croatia
cannot remain a hostage too long to a situation with no settlement
of these problems in the offing. We shall intensify our efforts in
this field in the coming two or three months. The Government must
assume its portion of responsibility and show greater efficacy,
Racan added.
The Government will try to improve its work, organisation and
interaction among ministries. This will be considered by the end of
this week.
If some cannot follow the planned changes in a short period, we
shall then reshuffle the government as we agreed to. At the moment
we are not likely to reshuffle the government, Racan was quoted by
the radio as saying.
The PM reiterated that he and the entire Government supported the
work of Finance Minister Mato Crkvenac. This does not mean Crkvenac
must leave the Government because he revoked an instruction on
duty-free products, adopted earlier in good faith, Racan
explained.
He denied some media reports that his and a Croatian business
delegation's visit to the United States had been cancelled. The
Premier said he had personally called off the trip which should have
taken about a week, as it was too long considering his schedule and
duties. "There will be a very brief visit and the short and
efficient presentation of Croatia's economy," he concluded.
