ZAGREB, Sept 5 (Hina) - Croatia's First Deputy Prime Minister Goran
Granic on Tuesday held talks in Zagreb with the United Nations
Assistant High Commissioner for Refugees Soren Jessen-Petersen on
the implementation of a Croatian refugee return programme.
Granic and Jessen-Petersen agreed certain steps forward had been
made in implementing the programme, the government's Media and
Public Relations Service said in a statement.
Both officials expect legal preconditions will soon be cleared to
facilitate an effective performance by housing commissions, which
provide accommodation for refugees and displaced persons returning
to pre-war homes, especially in connection with illegal and
multiple tenancies.
Both officials agreed special attention was being given to finding
alternate accommodation for people who have to leave property owned
by returnees.
Granic and the UN official believe the key to reviving areas of
special government concern is starting economy and creating
conditions offering new jobs. In this respect, Croatia expects
further, fast and concrete assistance from the international
community which should come through the Stability Pact for
Southeast Europe.
Both officials agreed the Croatian government's cooperation with
the UN High Commissioner for Refugees was very good.
