NEW YORK, Sept 5 (Hina) - Croatia's President Stjepan Mesic, who arrived in New York to attend the United Nations' Millennium Summit, on Tuesday commenced a series of his bilateral meetings with the talks with Jordanian King Abdullah
II and Ukrainian President Leonid Kucma. Both meetings focused on the bilateral relations. President Mesic said the foundations of the good ties with the Hashemite Kingdom had been laid when a Jordanian battalion was deployed in Croatia as part of UN peace-keepers (UNPROFOR). Mesic and King Abdullah II described the political ties between their countries as very good but added that the economic relations were poor. The Jordanian sovereign called the Croatian Oil Industry (INA) to be engaged in the exploitation of the Jordanian oil and gas resources. Mesic said he would convey this message to the INA management. President Mesic said the foundations of the good ties with the

As regards Ukraine, President Kucma will give support to his
country's companies to launch projects in Croatia and we shall
stimulate Croatian firms to be engaged in Ukraine, Croatian
President added.
Kucma and Mesic also discussed the issue of the navigation on the
Danube and he transport and exploitation of gas deposits.
President Mesic invited his interlocutors to visit Croatia and
Kucma and King Abdullah called him to pay a visit to Kiev and Amman.
After these talks Mesic departed for New Haven where he delivered a
lecture on Croatia at the international relations institute of the
University of Yale.
During his dialogue with students and professors Mesic talked about
internal democratic development in Croatia and main guidelines in
the country's foreign policy.
On Tuesday morning, Mesic, along with a few hundred heads of state
who are participating in the UN summit, was present at a prayer
meeting in the New York Waldorf Astoria hotel. The wish of
organisers of this meeting was to prepare a symbolic
interdenominational gathering which may contribute to the
importance of the UN summit.
