ZAGREB, July 24 (Hina) - "I, too, am part of the Croatian general public who believe that soccer debts must not be cleared with taxpayers' money," Croatian President Stipe Mesic said on Monday. All who acted against the law, or
engaged in embezzlement, must answer, he told reporters in Zagreb following talks with former Yugoslav Prime Minister Milan Panic, adding this referred to both the economy and soccer, or any other sport. Finance Police findings following recent inspections at Dinamo, Hajduk, Osijek, and Rijeka for the 1996-2000 period, say the four soccer clubs owe some 577 million kuna (US$70.37 million) in unpaid taxes and contributions to the government. In view of the clubs' many obligations, the Finance Ministry will attempt to collect those debts in a manner acceptable to all, in cooperation with the Tax Administration and the Finance Police, as has been announced.(hina) ha mm
