MESIC: SUBORDINATING ARMY HQ TO DEFENCE MINISTRY POLITICISES ARMY

ZAGREB, July 19 (Hina) - Croatian President Stipe Mesic said in Zagreb on Tuesday subordinating the Croatian Army Headquarters to the Ministry of Defence (MORH), as suggested by Defence Minister Jozo Rados as part of MORH's reorganisation, would mean another politicisation of the army. "If the Headquarters were under the Ministry, this would mean we are returning to the politicisation of the army," the President told reporters at Zagreb's airport upon returning from Brussels. "At MORH, the positions from deputy ministers to assistants are distributed on political, namely party basis, yet we want to depoliticise the army," he said, adding the matter would be subjected to further debate.
